My earliest memories of childhood.
You were by my side
All over the streets, Guyana
In your tiny yellow car we would ride
You spoke to me like a person
Even though I was only three
You encouraged thought and reason
And demanded more of me
At six years old I wrote you a letter
To tell you how much my life had changed
I had a baby sister now
And nothing felt the same
You said being a ‘big sister was important’
and my parents needed me to be strong
I must now be an example
And show her right from wrong
When we finally met again in NY
It was as if we never missed a beat
On your heels I often skipped
With any business you had on the street
I have never been more empowered
Like the days I was in your care
You always know just what to say
To help me face my fears
You were not a respecter of persons
You are who you are to the core
Grandpa you believed in me and made me
Believe in myself Even more
And when I was faced with prejudice
From those from my very own tribe
You reminded me that all blessings come from God
It is not for MAN to decide.
I salute you grandfather
You are among the best of men for me
It is because of you sir
I have the courage to be
the best version of ME.
